Biomedical text processing (BioNLP) is a topic of emerging importance in natural language processing, bioinformatics and computational linguistics. Researchers working in the biological, biomedical and clinical domains increasingly need the help of computational linguistis and engineers of language to process large quantities of biomedical and molecular biology literature, such as PubMed, from where to mine semantic categories, relations among them... Linking the contents of these resources to each other as well as to ontologies of the field can enable access to and discovery of detailed linguistic information, which would be otherwise impossible, and which could, in turn, foster a major leap in NLP research and development.

EUROLAN 2017 will include topics such as:

  • mining biomedical literature
  • event-based text mining for biology and related fields
  • event extraction in medical texts
  • entity identification and normalization
  • conceptual graphs extracted from medical texts
  • annotation of semantic content, with applications in medicine and biology
  • textual big data techniques
  • medical search engines
  • HIT (health information technologies) and LT
  • deep learning for bioinformatics
  • biomedical question/aswering (see also the BioASQ evaluation challenge)
  • Clinical Data Repositories / Big Data and Cloud Computing
  • clinical relationships
  • medical topic modeling
  • medical language systems
  • clinical text analysis
  • text summarization in the biomedical domain

Over one entire week, internationally reputed specialists will give tutorials and demos (during mornings), and will conduct practical sessions (in the afternoons). A doctoral and young researchers workshop will offer you the opportunity to also present your work in plenary sessions and to validate it against the School specialists’ opinions.

The EUROLAN Summer School series was established in 1993 and has been held biennially in Romania since then. You may have a look at the last editions here.
